31 piece chair
05
Overview
This project explored sustainable furniture design through the creation of a chair built strictly from green wood sourced on campus. The brief imposed strong material and process constraints: no adhesives were allowed, requiring all structural connections to be achieved through joinery, form, and mechanical solutions.
Outcome
The final result is a full-scale 31 piece green wood chair that balances minimal form with structural integrity. The joints used include mortise and tenon, and cross lap. The chair is made from maple, and walnut.
Ideation
The project began with studying chair ergonomics through measurements, analysis, and quick test forms to understand posture, comfort, and structural load paths. Ideation was driven by sketching that balanced minimal form with real construction logic. These ideas were tested through 3D-printed models and physical prototypes to evaluate proportion, stability, and comfort.
